The Naughty List of Mr. Scrooge (2024) Movie Recap

The film follows a chilling Christmas reunion where a group of college friends gathers at Chandler Crisp’s family mansion, ten years after their lives were shattered by the suicide of Glen, Tabby’s boyfriend at the time. The group includes Tabby, now with her new boyfriend Jonny, and their old friends Kelsey, Tucker, Chandler, and Julian. Notably, one friend, Franny, opts out of the gathering, only to meet a grisly fate later.

The night takes a dark turn during a “Secret Scrooge” gift exchange. Each friend receives disturbing, personalized gifts that tie them to Glen’s tragic death. The ominous notes accompanying the gifts accuse them of contributing to Glen’s despair—Julian for injuring him, Tucker for firing him, Chandler for lying about his behavior, and so on. Soon after, the group begins to be hunted by someone dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge, turning their festive get-together into a blood-soaked nightmare.

The friends suspect Marty, the eccentric house manager with a known admiration for Glen. But as the bodies pile up—Roma, the chef, found dead in the bathtub, Julian mutilated in the driveway, and Franny’s severed head gruesomely presented at dinner—it becomes clear the truth is far more sinister.

The shocking twist reveals Jonny, Tabby’s seemingly kind boyfriend, to be Jonathan Rosenthal—a former drama student who was supposed to play Scrooge in the campus production of A Christmas Carol on the night of Glen’s death. Motivated by vengeance, Jonny orchestrated the killings with the help of Kelsey, who harbored her own dark secrets. It’s revealed that Kelsey was having an affair with Glen. On the night of his death, Glen threatened to confess everything to Tabby, leading to a confrontation on the theater roof where Kelsey inadvertently caused his fatal fall. She forged Glen’s suicide note to cover her tracks, but guilt and resentment festered over the years, culminating in her partnership with Jonny for revenge.

In a dramatic turn, Jonny kills Kelsey after discovering she lied about the full extent of her involvement in Glen’s death. He then reveals his meticulous, years-long plan to Tabby—how he reinvented himself, pursued her, and used her to infiltrate her circle and exact his revenge. Jonny, identifying with Scrooge as a fellow outcast blamed for tragic circumstances, considers the massacre his grand performance of the role he was denied.

The climax pits Tabby against Jonny in a brutal confrontation. Tabby, driven by both survival and a rekindled love for Christmas, manages to defeat him, killing him in a fierce battle. She emerges as the sole survivor, delivering a dark twist on Tiny Tim’s iconic line: “God bless us, everyone.”

The film intertwines horror and psychological drama, using the classic themes of A Christmas Carol—redemption, regret, and transformation—to explore betrayal, obsession, and the festering wounds of past trauma. The friends’ hidden sins, Kelsey’s betrayal, and Jonny’s elaborate facade underscore how the most dangerous monsters often hide behind friendly faces, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Ultimately, the film delivers a bloody cautionary tale about the cost of unresolved guilt and the dangers of unchecked vengeance.
