Distant (Long Distance) (2024) Movie Recap

Distant (also known as Long Distance) weaves together elements of sci-fi survival thriller with a deeply human story about grief, trust, and connection. Set against the backdrop of a hostile alien world, the film follows two survivors who must overcome both physical dangers and their own emotional barriers to survive.

The story begins with Andy Ramirez awakening from cryo sleep as his mining vessel, the Borealis, crashes on an unknown planet. Immediately, we’re introduced to one of the film’s key relationships – the sometimes amusing, sometimes frustrating partnership between Andy and his AI survival suit assistant, LEONARD. This dynamic provides both comic relief and deeper commentary on human-AI relationships throughout the film.

After a dramatic crash landing, Andy finds himself in a desperate situation with depleting oxygen levels. The film efficiently establishes its stakes through this immediate survival threat, while also introducing the hostile environment through a brief encounter with another survivor, Dwayne. This character’s unstable behavior and mysterious disappearance after refusing to share oxygen creates early tension and uncertainty about who can be trusted.

The plot gains momentum when Andy makes radio contact with Naomi Calloway, a drilling supervisor whose escape pod crashed 10 kilometers away. This setup creates the film’s central journey, as Andy must decide whether to risk his limited oxygen supplies to help another person. His initial hesitation speaks to both practical concerns and deeper emotional barriers, setting up the character development to come.

As Andy makes his perilous journey to reach Naomi, the film reveals its emotional core through their radio conversations. We learn that Andy lost his wife and young son Caleb in a car accident on his birthday, while Naomi took the job after a painful breakup that left her unable to trust others. These parallel traumas establish both characters as people running from emotional connection, making their eventual partnership more meaningful.

The alien world itself becomes a character in the story, populated by terrifying spider-like predators with scorpion tails that hunt in packs. These creatures, which can detect light and sound, create intense sequences that force Andy to move carefully and strategically. The addition of mysterious bioluminescent creatures adds another layer of alien mystery to the environment, though their true nature remains unexplored.

The film builds to a climactic sequence when Andy finally reaches Naomi, finding her trapped in her escape pod with an injured leg. Their attempt to reach safety in the crashed Borealis leads to multiple encounters with the alien creatures, culminating in a tense airlock scene. This sequence showcases both the physical and emotional stakes as LEONARD sacrifices itself to help launch an escape pod, which they use to crush one of the creatures.

What sets Distant apart from typical survival thrillers is its focus on emotional healing alongside physical survival. Andy’s journey from wanting isolation to risking his life for Naomi parallels his process of opening up to human connection again after his family’s death. Similarly, Naomi’s experience helps her overcome her fear of abandonment. The hostile alien environment serves as both literal danger and metaphor for the emotional barriers they must overcome.

The film’s resolution strikes a delicate balance between hope and uncertainty. While Andy and Naomi find a habitable section of the crashed ship where they can survive, they face a potential 18-month wait for rescue. Rather than treating this as a defeat, the film presents it as an opportunity for healing and connection, symbolized by their decision to “move in together” in their newfound shelter.

The final scene, where they try to remember the tune that a rebooted LEONARD plays, provides a perfect metaphor for their situation. Like the familiar but unplaceable song, they’ve found something both new and somehow recognizable in their connection with each other. The mention of the binary sun system by LEONARD emphasizes their physical distance from home while highlighting that they’ve found a different kind of home in each other.

Throughout the film, the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence adds another layer to its exploration of connection and trust. Andy’s evolving relationship with LEONARD, from annoyance to genuine appreciation, especially after the AI’s sacrifice, reflects the film’s broader themes about the unexpected ways we can form meaningful bonds.

The movie leaves several questions unanswered, such as the nature of the bioluminescent creatures and the ultimate fate of Dwayne. However, these mysteries serve to keep the focus on the human story at the film’s center. The alien world, with its dangers and mysteries, ultimately functions as a catalyst for personal growth and emotional connection rather than the main focus of the story.

Distant succeeds by grounding its sci-fi elements in genuine human emotion. While it features impressive survival sequences and alien threats, its real strength lies in its portrayal of two wounded people finding hope and connection in the most isolated of circumstances. The film suggests that sometimes we need to travel to the farthest reaches of space to find our way back to human connection, and that healing can happen even in the most unlikely places.

By focusing on the human element within its sci-fi framework, Distant creates a compelling narrative about the power of connection and the possibility of healing from past trauma. The film reminds us that even in our most isolated moments, the potential for meaningful connection exists, and sometimes the greatest distances we need to traverse are emotional rather than physical.
